EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES

If you hear an emergency alarm:
stop work upon hearing the emergency alarm

1.                   turn off electrical devices

2.                   close doors and windows to isolate the fire and smoke, but do not lock

3.                   exit the building taking keys and valuables with you

If a Zone Warden (see list below) is in attendance, follow their instructions.

Lifts are not to be used.

4.                   assemble at the Assembly Point outside the main entrance of the Coombs Building

5.                   do not re-enter the building until clearance is given

FIRE

If you discover a fire:

1.                   alert others in the area, including your Zone Warden (see list below) if possible

2.                   ring the ACT Fire Brigade on 0 000 immediately

3.                   contact ANU Security on 52249 and give the following information:

a.       what is burning

b.       exact location of fire (building, floor, room number)

c.       your name and phone extension

4.                   if no alarm is sounding, find and operate Break Glass Alarm at Fire Panel

If a Zone Warden (see list below) is in attendance, follow their instructions.

Lifts are not to be used.

5.                   assemble at the Assembly Point outside the main entrance of the Coombs Building

6.                   do not re-enter the building until clearance is given

POWDER THREAT

If you think you have received or discovered a unknown substance (powdery), you must

1.                   inform your Chief Warden (see list below) or ANU Security (xtn 52249) immediately;

2.                   isolate the substance; you can put something over it like a bin;

3.                   isolate yourself and any others who may have come into direct contact with the substance;

4.                   try to wash your hands and face;

5.                   Keep your phone line open; make sure that Security or your Chief warden knows your extension;

6.                   refrain from eating or drinking until the all clear is given (may hamper medical treatment if required);

7.                   in the first instance of receiving a powder threat, ANU Security (ph: 52249) with the assistance of the ANU Fire Safety Officer will

a.       secure the perimeter of the building.  No personnel will be allowed in or out of the building

b.       ensure the suspect article is contained and that the area has been cordoned off

c.       liaise with security and emergency services;

8.                   once the Police arrive they will talk to the affected persons(s) to ascertain the level of threat;

9.                   if the ACT Fire Brigade attends, they will send in fire fighters in full chemical suits to obtain a sample of the powder;

10.               this then goes to the Canberra hospital for testing.  If the result of the test is positive, all the occupants will be bussed to the Canberra hospital for treatment;

11.               the whole process can take up to five hours.

BOMB THREAT PROCEDURES

If you receive a bomb threat:

1.                   keep the caller on the line and obtain as much information as possible – type of device; location; time of detonation etc;

2.                   don’t hang up, even if the caller hangs up – it may be possible to trace the call;

3.                   use the bomb threat check list which is included in the emergency pack for every office in the building;

4.                   on a separate phone contact ANU Security (xtn 52249) and the Chief Warden (see list below).

ANU Security and/or your Chief Warden will direct further action.
