Academy of Social Sciences Australia

Keith Dowding, Professor of and Head of the Political Science Program RSSS, has been elected to the Academy of Social Sciences Australia. He arrived in Australia from the London School of Economics in July 2007. He has published widely in public administration and public policy, comparative politics, urban politics and political philosophy. His best known books are on political power and he is currently editing an Encylopedia of Power for Sage. His main research areas at present are The Career Paths of Cabinet Ministers in the UK and Australia; Exit and Voice as Service Satisfaction Signals; and the Measurement of Freedom and Rights. He has two books about to be published Rational Choice Politics, Sage a four volume collection of the most important articles in the field edited with Kenneth A. Shepsle and Torun Dewan, and The Selection of Ministers in Europe: Hiring and Firing, Routledge edited with Patrick Dumont. Keith is a founder member of and Chair of SEDEPE (the Selection and De-Selection of Political Elites) network of scholars examining the career paths of ministers throughout the world. Economics PhD Conference at RSSS
20-21 November 2008

The Annual PhD Conference in Economics and Business - a joint venture of the RSSS Centre for Economic Policy Research, Australian National University and the Economic Policy Research Centre, University of Western Australia - will be held at the ANU on 20-21 November 2008. The conference, first convened in 1987, is held alternately at ANU and UWA. The 2008 conference will be hosted by the The Centre for Economic Policy Research, which is part of the Economics Program, Research School of Social Sciences.  The conference aims to provide the students with an assessment of their presentational skills and a constructive critique of their research by a group of peers and senior academics. It is also an opportunity to access a wider academic network and the postgraduate job market.

The conference is made possible each year by the generous support of sponsors from government agencies and departments, and the corporate and business sector.
