Allan Martin Week lecture
Professor Ken Inglis
Last week was the History Program's 'Allan Martin Week'. Each year, the Program hosts a series of events to commemorate our late colleague Allan Martin. 'Allan Martin Week' began on Tuesday 15 at 6pm with a lecture by Professor Ken Inglis on 'Speechmaking in Australian History'. (The Lecture will be published soon as a booklet, and as an audio recording on the History Program website.) The Lecture was followed by a reception during which Professor Stephen Foster launched a collection of Allan Martin's essays The 'Whig' View of Australian History and Other Essays (Melbourne University Press). Later in the week, Ken Inglis met with postgraduate students - individually and in a workshop. On Thursday 17, the Program hosted a Colloquium about one of Ken's best known books Sacred Places (The Miegunyah Press 1998). The discussion was led by a panel made up of Jay Winter (Yale), Peter Stanley (National Museum of Australia) and Joy Damousi (University of Melbourne) - each of whom has written about collective memories of twentieth century wars.
